Nine Important Services for Your GMC Sierra

The GMC Sierra is one of the most powerful and impressive trucks on the road, offering fantastic, reliable performance for many years. Of course, to get the most from it, you need to treat it well and take proper care of it, which comes down to service and maintenance. Here at our GMC service center, we love getting the chance to help our customers take great care of their vehicles, but we know it’s not the most exciting part of owning a truck for some people. Still, it’s absolutely essential for the long-term well-being of your pickup, and that’s why we do everything we can to make it as simple and hassle-free as possible. Today, we thought we’d take a moment to remind you about essential maintenance items for your GMC Sierra, some of which can be easy to forget or overlook—no judgment!

Important Service #1: Routine Checks and Frequent Maintenance

You might expect us to list things like checking your GMC Sierra’s engine oil level, changing your oil, or rotating your tires. These tasks are equally important and often come together on any routine maintenance schedule, so we’re including all of that in this first entry—never forget to take care of the most routine and frequent types of service. You’ll probably need to do these about every 7,500 miles or so, and the routine aspect of them is what can make it so easy to forget. It’s one of those things where the most apparent stuff can end up slipping our minds because we know we shouldn’t forget it, and it then gets overlooked. Remember to prioritize these services and take care of them often.

Important Service #2: Replace Your Air Filters

Like most vehicles, your GMC Sierra has two air filters that you should be aware of, and you must replace them as needed. The first is an engine air filter, which helps ensure the air entering your engine (which mixes with fuel for combustion) is free of dust and pollutants. This ensures optimal performance and efficiency, so replacing it with a clean filter often is essential. The cabin air filter helps keep the air going into your cabin clean and free of dust, pollen, and other pollutants passing through the climate control system. You should replace this air filter often as well—it’s vital if you or your passengers have issues with allergies, asthma, or similar conditions, but even without those, breathing through a dirty air filter can cause long-term health complications.

Important Service #3: Replace Your Fuel Filter(s)

Just like some filters keep your engine oil and air clean, you also have a fuel filter (or two) in your truck to keep the fuel going into your engine as clean as possible. You want to avoid dirt, pollutants, and moisture from water getting into your engine since these things can reduce efficiency and overall performance. If you have a GMC Sierra with a diesel engine, you likely have two fuel filters—diesel fuel requires a bit more work to keep it clean and efficient. Make sure your fuel filters (no matter how many you have) are replaced regularly to keep your truck running beautifully.

Important Service #4: Check and Service Your Truck’s Transfer Case

The tricky part about transfer case service is that not everyone needs to consider it. If you have a GMC Sierra with four-wheel drive, your pickup has a transfer case that helps send power from the engine/transmission to the front and rear wheels. This transfer case does a lot of work and takes a lot of abuse—it’s designed to handle it, but it still needs some care. You should change your transfer case fluid regularly to keep things running well; if you tend to drive in areas with a lot of dirt and dust (especially if you go off-road with your Sierra), you’ll need to replace the fluid more often.

Important Service #5: Replace Your Tires as Needed

We’re mostly focusing on things that are easy to forget or overlook today, but we wanted to take a moment to mention replacing your tires. This is because when we say “as needed,” we don’t mean when you have a flat tire or it starts coming apart. Keep an eye on your tires and perform routine inspections to check their air pressure and tread depth so you can replace them before they put you at risk on the road. We know this is easy to forget, but it can make a huge difference in how well your truck performs and keeps you safe.

Important Service #6: Check and Service Your Transmission

Just like the transfer case we mentioned earlier, your transmission is a vital part of sending power from the engine of your GMC Sierra to your wheels—no matter what drive type you have. You need to have your transmission checked out regularly, though not necessarily as often as other routine services, to ensure it functions properly. In addition to regular inspections, your transmission fluid must occasionally be replaced to ensure everything works well. Again, if you put your Sierra through some severe driving conditions (like going off-road), then you should have this service performed more often.

Important Service #7: Don’t Forget Your Radiator/Engine Cooling

While this might be slightly more obvious than some of the things we mention today, it’s vital for proper performance. Just like with your tires, your radiator is something you should check on a regular basis to stay ahead of problems—your truck overheating on the side of the road is not the time to realize you have an issue with your radiator. Check your radiator, its reservoir, and coolant on a set schedule to ensure everything looks good. It’s a good idea to replace your coolant roughly every five years if no other issues arise.

Important Service #8: Inspect and Service Engine Accessory Belts

The drive belts with your engine are designed to take tremendous abuse and last a very long time—that’s great, but it also means they’re easy to forget about. It’s a good idea to have these belts inspected every so often just to be sure they’re not fraying or needing replacement. Even if they keep working well, we suggest replacing these belts every 10 years, regardless of a lack of cracking or damage, to stay ahead of inevitable wear.

Important Service #9: Replace Spark Plugs or Glow Plugs

Rounding things out, we have an old favorite of ours: your spark plugs. These are also designed to last a long time, but they’ll inevitably wear out and must be replaced. If your truck starts running rough or you can hear/feel misfiring from your engine, the spark plugs are an excellent place to diagnose problems. Diesel engines don’t have spark plugs but have glow plugs instead to help maintain an ideal fuel temperature for combustion—these should be checked on occasion and replaced if you have rough performance from a Sierra with a diesel engine.
